Le développement durable dans la fabrique de la ville

This paper deals with some outstanding issues concerning urban sustainable development in France, based on the cases of six large regional centres : Bordeaux, Lille, Lyon, Montpellier, Nantes and Toulouse. We analyse the reticular dimension of these stakes regarding the production of urban spaces and following the hypothesis of the change from a “multi” to an “inter”-levelled approach of the implementation of urban sustainable development principles, rather than studying sectional elements of the subject. This relational point of view refers to a triple focus : first, on the sphere of competence and the scales of the main concerned social players and groups, then on the communication and political local issues of the public setting of the problem, finally on the tools and the technical plan of the applied projects. So this defines urban sustainable development as a part of a locally fluctuating package of cognitive “chainings” that clearly positions the issues in interrelational and intersectional spaces of in-between
