Litteralior . L’englobement du spirituel dans le littéral selon Pierre de Jean Olivi

As Jacques Fournier makes clear in his detailed criticism of the Lectura super Apocalipsim, Peter John Olivi’s exegesis, just like Joachim of Fiore’s, is flawed by an abuse of allegorical interpretation, which is mainly put to use as a confirmation of their theology of history. Yet, educated along the rules of university exegetical training, Olivi is also constantly defending and practising the primacy of the litteral sense. His reference to the Pseudo-Dionysius helps understanding the way in which he combines both approaches. Just as the divinity revealed itself by taking on a human corporeal shape, the spirit has to be searched within the letter, not beyond. In this way, the most litteral sense (litteralior - a term often used by Olivi) can provide an access to the most spiritual one
