The Chinese in the Netherlands

The Chinese are one of the oldest ethnic minorities in the Netherlands. They control a major part of the restaurant economy and, through their cuisine, have strongly influenced Dutch eating habits. Up until the 1980s, little research had been done into the Chinese encounter with Dutch society,1 but over the last several years a number of academic studies have been published about the Chinese community in the Netherlands. This chapter looks at that community, and brings together the findings of those studies
