Middening and Manuring in Neolithic Europe

This chapter presents the evidence from archaeological plant macrofossils and insect remains, alluding only briefly to some other lines of evidence germane to the study of manure in the past-such as phosphates, mites, the spores of coprophilous fungi and the eggs of intestinal parasites. Most Roman sites in England with waterlogged preservation produce at least some evidence for stable manure, and it seems to have been a major constituent of a significant proportion of the more richly organic deposits of the period. The chapter concerns stable manure in the sense of material from the floors of structures housing equines, there are questions relating to the range of other animals represented and the recognition of dung per se. Another category of remains which it may be appropriate to include is the spores of coprophilous fungi, indicators of dung though not, of course, specifically of stable manure
