This chapter surveys the history of Muslim–Christian relations in Africa and some contemporary developments, including the changing perspectives on the topic since the late 1999s. The focus on religious conflict – particularly in Western policy and security perspectives oriented towards Africa’s largest nation Nigeria – has been challenged by scholars and African activists who reveal the ebbs and flows of religious coexistence in many African communities. In light of the growing scholarship on Muslim–Christian complexities in Africa – emphasizing fluidity and local-level conflicts and mediation mechanisms – this chapter argues that state-centered perspectives and efforts to manage religious affairs are inherently flawed
