Lithic Industries and Their Role in Neolithisation Models in Southeast Europe

In the mid 1980s work on the lithic assemblages from the Karanovo tell as well as on lithics from other Early Neolithic settlements was carried out by the author. As a result, a characteristic macroblade technology was distinguished; its traits were a semi-steep and steep retouching and the use of a high quality yellow flint with white spots. This technology is associated with the first half of the 7th millennium bc and the Early Neolithic phases of the Karanovo culture. J. K. Kozlowski had already defined some of the most characteristic features of macroblades occurring in the Starcevo culture in 1982. In regard to the Hoca Cesme assemblages, among the total 2351 artefacts from phase 2 just seven items are Karanovo blades. The term 'Balkan flint' was initially created with reference solely to the raw material used for the high retouched macroblade technology and should not be applied to any other type of flint found in Bulgaria
