Defining Collective Burials

The aim of the study of collective burials1 is to reconstruct the history of tombs from the time of their construction to abandonment. This chapter sets out to answer questions such as whether or not complete bodies or already skeletonised remains were deposited and if there was any patterning related to their deposition. In addition, such studies consider if inclusions or items of personal adornment were associated with the individuals and whether or not the internal space of the tomb was used completely or only in part. These studies also seek to reconstruct the sample population profile of those who were selected for inclusion in them (the proportions of males and females, adults, children, and infants) and to document if the architecture of the monument changed during the period of its use. This integrated archaeothanatological approach includes both biological aspects of the dead and archaeological contextual information (Duday, 1981)
