This book discusses the issue of understanding and translation from different theoretical as well as ethnographic perspectives. For quite some time, anthropology has been regarded as an ‘art of translation’, a textual exercise, facilitating understanding across boundaries of time and culture. One problem is that discussions of boundaries and the category of ‘the foreign’ tend to be heavily ideological and rhetorical in tone. Anthropology involves a journey (mentally, at least) into strange and distant lands, an attempt to understand the unique and bizarre — in short, going beyond the boundaries of time and society. Indeed, the salience of concepts of ethnicity and boundaries may derive more from agrarian discourse, from state ideologies and nationalist rhetorics, than the realities of non-state societies — that is, from ‘us’ rather than ‘them’. The concepts of culture and boundaries — implicit in most discussions of social understanding — have been the subject of much theoretical debate
