Religion is present in all the acts and decisions of political life. A clear distinction between religious bodies and government thus remains totally anachronistic. But the concept of civitas- or polished-religion emerges from a much broader sociocultural mesh networks and linkages between actors. The participation of civic authorities in Italy does not imply the expression of their personal religious preference: in many cases, the role played by decurions was expressed in the simple granting of portion of public space in which dedicants then laid their offerings at their own expense. This chapter presents a clear dichotomy in the north-east of the Italian peninsula (where, Aquileia and Verona in particular, freedmen, Augustales and decurions were heavily involved in cults of Isis) and Campania (where private initiatives especially by judges dominate the scene).
