Historical archaeology has made great strides in most European countries in recent years. In South-Eastern Europe, however, it is still almost non-existent. Where it is practised, it has long transcended the boundaries of academic disciplines and today combines methods and approaches adopted from history, sociology, archaeology, anthropology, art history and ethnology. The greatest upturn in recent years has occurred in the area of contemporary archaeology. However, whilst historical and archaeological practice is multi-faceted and remains from our more recent past are being excavated and studied in many places, the universities are lagging behind in this development and in many countries are missing the boat
