Sons of Heracles

This chapter argues that Marc Antony both consciously and unconsciously attempted to play the role of a successor to Alexander while in the east. Many of the links between the two men were the result of personal traits and familial ancestral claims. However, it is clear that in the competition for power in the Late Republic the image of Alexander and of Heracles could be used not only as positive representation of Antony's ambitions and successes but also as part of a portrayal of an oriental despot
