The Oyo Yoruba and the Atlantic trade, 1670 to 1830

Some hold the view that the Yoruba people of south-western Nigeria were not seriously affected by the export slave trade until after the 1820s, following the collapse of the Old Oyo empire. This chapter provides detailed information about the involvement of Old Oyo in the Atlantic slave trade. It argues that the north-eastern savanna of the Yoruba territories, occupied by the northern Ekiti, Akoko and Yagba, was a slave catchment area for the Oyo Yoruba. The chapter suggests that other parts of the eastern Yoruba region constituted a slave catchment area for the Benin warriors. The consensus of Yoruba traditions describes the peoples of the middle and south of Egbado Division in the extreme south-west of Nigeria as late offshoots of other branches of the Yoruba peoples
