Roman army pay scales revisited

Soldiers of the Roman imperial army received their annual pay in three installments (stipendia),due on the first of January, May, and September. Yet, stipendia had to be earned (merere), either, for instance, as stipendia caligata or militaria, equestria, centurionica, curatoria veteranorum or evocativa. A centurio in Pannonia even chose to term his installments salaria instead of stipendia, just like the evocati from the praetorian cohorts and contracted specialists (salariarii) in the legio
