The year 1911 was a turning point in several respects for the Japanese women's liberation movement. Matsui Sumako, the best-known Japanese actress in the 1910s, performed the role of Nora, the heroine of Henrik Ibsen's A Doll's House. In September of the same year, the Seitô Society was established as the first women's literary society organized by women. Several of its members were later involved in the Japanese women's liberation movement. In the beginning, the purpose of the Seitô Society was to cultivate women's literature (Hiratsuka 1911). By 1913, the members were more concerned with the women's liberation movement; more articles on women's issues appear in Seitô's magazines.1
