The Mimomys-Arvicola boundary and the enamel thickness quotient (SDQ) of Arvicola as stratigraphic markers in the Middle Pleistocene

The genus Arvicola can be used as an important biostratigraphic tool during the Middle Pleistocene. Both the earliest occurrence ofArvicola, and the gradual reduction of the enamel thickness in some parts of the molars, can be used as stratigraphic markers. The earliest occurrence of Arvicola, that is the Mimomys-Arvicola boundary, is younger than the Brunhes-Matuyama boundary, definitely older than the first major advance of the Elsterian / Anglian ice sheet and even older than Interglacial IV of the ‘Cromerian Complex’ in the Netherlands. This excludes the possibility that the West Runton Upper Freshwater Bed and the interglacial of Voigtstedt correlate with the Cromer IV Interglacial and immediately precede the Elsterian / Anglian ice advance, as has previously been suggested. The record ofArvicola does not occur in the faunal list from ‘Ubeidiya is rejected, and the claimed stratigraphical position of the Isernia fauna, which contains Arvicola, below the Brunhes-Matuyama boundary, must be regarded as doubtful. The thinning of the enamel band in the trailing edge of the molars characterizing the evolution from Arvicola terrestris cantiana to Arvicola terrestris terrestris can only be used as a stratigraphic indicator in combination with other criteria, since the extant populations of Arvicola terrestris show a strong morphological cline in this characteristic from the Mediterranean to Northern Europe. However, if the fossil record is complete enough, waves of immigration of more primitive forms can be traced from the Mediterranean area into Central Europe. Die Gattung Arvicola ist ein wichtiges Leitfossil im europäischen Mittelpleistozän. Sowohl das erste Auftreten der Gattung wie die allmähliche Ausdünnung bestimmter Bereiche des Schmelzbandes geben stratigraphische Anhaltspünkte. Die Mimomys-Arvicola Grenze, d.h. das erste Auftreten von Arvicola liegt oberhalb der Brunhes-Matuyama Grenze und mit Sicherheit früher als das Cromer IV- Interglazial in der niederländischen Chronologie. Daraus folgt, daß weder das Upper Freshwater Bed von West Runton noch das Interglazial von Voigtstedt dem Eisvorstoss des Elsterglazials unmittelbar vorausgehen. Sie können auch nicht mit dem Cromer IV niederländischer Zählung entsprechen, wie es vielfach angenommen wurde. Das Vorkommen von Arvicola in der Faunenliste von ‘Ubeidiya wird gestrichen, und eine Einstufung der Fauna von Isernia mit Arvicola unterhalb der Brunhes-Matuyama Grenze muss in Frage gestellt werden. Das Ausdünnen des leeseitien Schmelzbandes in den Molaren von Arvicola, das die evolutiven Veränderungen zwischen Arvicola terrestris cantiana und Arvicola terrestris terrestris ausmacht, kann nur zusammen mit anderen Argumenten als stratigraphisches Indiz gewertet werden, weil die rezente Fauna in diesem Merkmal eine starke Kline vom Mittelmeergebiet nach Mittel- und Nordeuropa aufweist. Bei einem genügend dichten Fossilbericht, kann man allerdings gerade an diesem Merkmal unterschiedliche Einwanderungswellen primitiver Formen in Mitteleuropa unterscheiden
