The catalogue of Hungarian origin legends was intended to be part of the grand plan adopted at the international meeting of legend researchers in 1963 which provided first for the preparation of national legend catalogues and then, on this basis, the compilation of an international classification. The system elaborated for European legends contains the subgenres classified into four groups: I. Etiological and eschatological legends, II. Historical and cultural history legends, III.
