Research Article| September 01 2016 The University Must Be Defended!: Safe Spaces, Campus Policing, and University-Driven Gentrification Bennett Carpenter; Bennett Carpenter Duke University [email protected] Bennett Carpenter is a PhD candidate in literature at Duke, where his research focuses on population, representation, and the city novel. He has published in edited volumes on Walter Benjamin (forthcoming) and the Dutch playwright Joost van den Vondel (Brill 2012). With Goldblatt and Hanson, he also researches and writes about the political economy of the contemporary university. She is currently engaged in two research projects. The first is a study of propaganda and settler colonialism in the twentieth-century United States. The second is a theoretical analysis of place-based pedagogy in the neoliberal university and its relationship to low-wage service work. Her published work has appeared in Mississippi Quarterly and the Journal of American Studies, and with Carpenter and Hanson in Pedagogy, Works and Days, and Feedback. Search for other works by this author on: This Site Google Lenora Hanson Lenora Hanson University of Wisconsin-Madison [email protected] Lenora Hanson is completing a PhD in Literary Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and will be joining the English department at NYU as Assistant Professor in fall 2017. Her dissertation, Riotous Life: The Rhetoric and Politics of Romantic Organisms, investigates poetic analogies forged between nonhuman life, reproduction and the politics of disruption throughout the eighteenth and nineteenth century. She has published in theory@ buffalo, Multitudes, and Essays in Romanticism, and has essays forthcoming in European Romantic Review and the edited collection Artful Designs: Automata and Hidden Machinery of Global Romanticism. In addition to literary projects, Lenora also works on financialization and the university and is completing an article with Elsa Noterman on the financial history and contemporary limitations of technology transfer programs.
