Die status van die geskiedenis in die werk van Jacques Derrida

Some critics of the French philosopher, Jacques Derrida, have labelled his work as ahistorical and apolitical. In this article Derrida's views on, among others, textuality, différance and metaphysics are scrutinized for the implications they may have for history: the strategic objective of Derrida's statement that there is nothing outside the text, is to demonstrate that reality can be approached only by an interpretative experience. The role of the temporal dimension in différence is stressed: the process of signification cannot be realized without the play of retentions from the past. Derrida problematizes the logocentric, metaphysical concept of history and suggests a plural, heterogeneous apprehension of history. Although Derrida's deconstruction does not include an extensive social theory, hardly any penetrating historical inquiry, whether literary or historiographical, can ignore Derrida's compelling challenge to history. In hierdie artikel word Derrida se opvattings oor, onder meer, tekstualiteit, différance en die metafisika ondersoek en word daar telkens gekonsentreer op die implikasies wat Derrida se denke vir die geskiedenis inhou: die strategiese oogmerk van Derrida se stelling dat daar niks buite die teks is nie, is om aan te toon dat die werklikheid slegs deur middel van ‘n interpretatiewe ervaring benaderkan word. Wat différance betref, word gewys op die rol van die temporele dimensie: die betekenings‐proses vereis die samespel van retensies uit die verlede. Derrida problematiseer die logosentriese, metafisiese konsep van die geskiedenis en lewer ‘n pleidooi vir ‘n plurale, heterogene geskiedenisbegrip. Alhoewel Derrida se dekonstruksie nie oor ‘n uitgebreide sosiale teorie beskik nie, kan ‘n indringende bemoeienis met die geskiedenis, hetsy literêr of historiografies, nouliks ontkom aan sy uitdagende perspektiewe op die geskiedenis
