The author considers the nature of erotic processes through the lens of transference/countertransference-focused psychotherapy, with particular emphasis on accounting for both old and cocreated, new self-other configurations. He also examines the defensive and transformational potential of the erotic within therapy. The need to develop and maintain a therapeutic frame and boundaries is examined, and the difficulty that erotic/sexual processes and awareness in the therapy pose in the countertransference is explored. The risk of boundary violations is highlighted
