An Exploration into the Relationship between Howard Thurman’s Spirituality and Black Theology

This article proposes that Howard Thurman’s conceptualization of spirituality can serve as a constructive tool for Black theology’s engagement with issues pertaining to the role of the spirit in human affairs. In doing so, this article posits that within Black theology, specifically that espoused by first and second generation Black theologians, there exists a narrow conception of spirituality that fails to adequately address the totality of needs in the lives of Black people, particularly those on the margins of society. To be more specific, because Black theology has emphasized a spirituality that elevates a praxis of social (economic, political) liberation at its center, it has neglected to aptly consider the significance of this mode of being that addresses the holistic concerns of ordinary Black people. Constructively, this article seeks to direct Black theology’s attention to the sermons and writings of Howard Thurman who, in his ministry and scholarship, advocated a spirituality that incorporated contemplative practices and sought to both empower people to undertake the social/communal concerns of his time as well as fulfil the inner needs of the person
