The degree of realism in the future time perspective of adolescents was investigated. The hypotheses were: (1) realism will decrease as the temporal distance of the goal increases, and (2) the depth of future time perspective and overall level of realism will increase as the level of maturity increases. The subjects were 113 male and female secondary school students ranging from 15 to 17 years old. The instruments used were a motivational inventory and a realism inventory. The data generally support the first hypothesis but suggest sex-based differences. As for the second hypothesis, significant differences between maturity levels on the 0.10, 0.05, and 0.01 levels were found in the depth of future time perspective and in three out of five realism items
