The present paper offers evidence for the influence of Focus and Topic constructions on the application of phonological rules in Italian and argues in favor of the phonological grammaticalization of Focus and Topic in this language. Specifically, it will be proposed that the loci for the interaction between the syntactic constituents of Focus and Topic on the one hand and phonology on the other are the Phonological Phrase (henceforth, Φ) and the Intonational Phrase (henceforth, I) respectively. Evidence will be given for a number of restructurings of these categories triggered by either Focus or Topic
