Although syntactically, canonical compounds are single words, phonologically, they often act as if they are somewhere between words and phrases. The phonological diagnostics that identify words and word edges often misfire when applied to compounds. For example, in Turkish, vowel harmony applies within syntactic words but does not apply between compound stems (Kabak & Vogel 2001)
