Revisiting the modern infrastructure ideal

This article focuses on the role of large-scale infrastructure projects in constructing a new Turkey, involving economic, political, and cultural transformation led by the conservative Justice and Development Party (Adalet ve Kalkınma Partisi - JDP) with a focus on the post-2010 period. This research takes a case study approach focusing on two newly inaugurated infrastructure projects of the JDP in Istanbul: The Yavuz Sultan Selim Bridge and Istanbul Airport. Through analyses of (1) speeches, discourses, and performances of political elites during the projects’ ceremonial events and (2) the technologies, aesthetics, and architectural designs used for the projects, this article argues that infrastructure projects are not only aimed to anchor (present and) future for civilization but also, to certain degrees, revive particular pasts. Hence, the paper contends that large-scale infrastructure projects in Istanbul aim at resurrecting an imaginary of the glory of the Ottoman Empire
