This feature of the mise en veilleuse ou l'oblit6ration partielle of tradition can be found in a particularly spectacular visible form in the sudden iconoclastic movements evident in Kongo history at which point most of the ritual relics are discarded, burned, or deactivated. With every decade of Kongo research, and with every decade of unfolding Kongo culture history, more episodes of this sort come to light. A rapid survey of 450 years of Kongo history reveals the moments of particular interest in this regard. In 1506 when Affonso the Christian defeated his pagan brother and proclaimed himself Kongo king, he ordered all pagan relics brought to the place of victory to be burned: masks, statues, and the like. In their place crosses were distributed.' In 1704 when the capital had been empty for a time because of feuding royal factions, the prophetess Kimpa Vita (Dona B6atrice) ordered all fetishes, including crosses, burned.3 In about 1850, a royalist renewal called the Peace of
