Après que l'armée britannique eût conquis les gisements stannifères du nord du Nigeria en 1906, les compagnies d'exploitation de l'étain, nouvellement arrivées, faisaient face à deux problèmes importants: 1. la compétition indigène et 2. l'insuffisance de main-d'œuvre. La compétition indigène fut tout simplement éliminée au moyen d'une série de projets de loi adoptés par l'administration coloniale britannique qui réussit à exclure les producteurs indigènes. La difficulté ‘d obtenir une main-d'œuvre constante constituait un problème plus grave. Malgré des tentatives de la part des Britanniques pour le recrutement d'une main-d'œuvre par la force ou par coercition monétaire (augmentation des taxes), les habitants du Plateau Jos, où se trouvaient les gisements stannifères, refusèrent de se laisser convaincre de rester dans les mines pour travailler
