Click to increase image sizeClick to decrease image sizeABSTRACTThe creation and development of a school system in rural regions of Lulua and Lake Moero in Shaba (formerly Katanga), which are both situated in the old apostolic curacy of the Franciscan mission, was, during the colonial period, hampered by certain factors which kept it from achieving its objectives, which were to stabilize and assure the development of the rural society.This lack of success may be attributed on the one hand to the inadequacy of the structure of the educational system in the face of rapid development of the copper belt of the Haut Katanga and the attractiveness of the industrial and mining centres, and on the other hand to colonial policies which tended to exploit the rural population rather than trying to integrate them within a total social, political and economic framework for the development of the whole country. This imbalance, indeed the disintegration of the rural way of life, is still an important consideration
