Guest, Family, or Roommate? How Framing Guides Private Hospitality of Ukrainian Refugees in Poland

This paper examines the dynamics of private refugee hosting, focusing on Polish citizens who sheltered Ukrainian forced migrants in the aftermath of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Amidst rising global migration, private hosting has gained significance, yet research has primarily focused on legal, institutional, and motivational aspects, leaving interpersonal and power dynamics underexplored. Using an integrated framework grounded in social framing theories, this study addresses these gaps by analyzing how hosts navigate the complexities of power, intimacy, and reciprocity in long-term hosting. It identifies six dimensions of hospitality—domain, duration of stay, selectivity, social distance, obligations, and agency—through which host-guest relationships are interpreted and negotiated. These dimensions inform the framing strategies hosts employ to manage the uncertainties and emotional challenges of private hosting. The study reveals that hosts often reframe the relationship, oscillating between familial and roommate-like dynamics, influenced by factors such as gender roles, generational hierarchies, and experiences of disability. These factors heighten the complexities of hosting and challenge traditional ideas of hospitality. By unpacking this interpretive labor, the paper contributes to a deeper understanding of private hosting as a moral and interpretive process, offering a portable framework for analyzing hospitality in other contexts of displacement, care, and informal cohabitation
