Depicted gesture, named gesture

What is at stake in the play between a gesture depicted in a representation and this “same”; gesture named in discourse? Using a historical example, the author attempts to answer this question by comparing the posture(s) of the Christ on the Autun cathedral with the astonishing description of a comparable pose found in a text dating from the Xllth century, which describes a reliquary. In order not to violate the depicted gesture, language must naturally say what it represents in the discursive tradition it alludes to — in this case theological — but acknowledge at the same time, the figurative economy which transforms this tradition. It calls for the Christ‐Judge to be sitting; the figure on the Autun tympanum is shown at once sitting and standing, arrested and in motion. The depicted gesture is ambivalent because it is polymorphic: this gesture can even stand up to contradiction consistently
