The aesthetics of early twenty-first century emo(tional) rock were inspired by the Gothic and Romantic writing of the nineteenth century. Even when no direct borrowing from Romantic writers can be traced, the general message carried by the lyrics and music videos can appear as a continuation – and sometimes as an exaggeration – of Romanticism. Indeed, in the early twenty-first century, men could be seen donning suits inspired by past decades and centuries, a trend that was in fact reminiscent of the Romantic obsession with the Middle Ages. They were usually found in castles, cemeteries or churches, lamenting the loss of a loved one or pouring the anxiety of existence out into the world. This article will therefore analyse some music videos and lyrics by emo bands to explore the continuity between Romantic themes and rock music
