Despite the prevalence in the literature on matrifocality and mother centredness in Caribbean families, there is very little focus on the role of grandmothers (and grandfathers), except in their role as surrogate parents, and as a characteristic of lower-class families. This article argues that the importance of grandparents (and grandmothers in particular) and of elderly aunts (often childless) in family life crosses class and geographic boundaries and suggests that their continuing importance is not merely a response to economic circumstance but a reflection of cultural beliefs in the centrality of family, and cultural practices in sharing responsibility for childrearing. Malgré la prédominance dans la littérature de la matrifocalité et le rôle central de la mère dans les familles caraïbéennes, on préte très peu d'attention au rôle des grands-mères (et grands-pères), sauf en tant que parents de substitution et en tant que trait caractéristique de familles de classes sociales inférieures. Cet article démontre que l'importance des grands-parents (et surtout des grands-mères) et de tantes plus âgées (souvent sans enfants) dans la vie de famille traverse les frontières de classes et de lieu; la persistance de leur importance n'est pas simplement une réponse aux circonstances économiques mais un reflet des croyances culturelles dans la centralité de la famille et des pratiques culturelles de partage de la responsabilité pour l'éducation des enfants
