"A "Vast, Unmysterious Landscape

Pauline Smith’s short story “Desolation” (1930) and C.W. de Kiewiet’s A History of South Africa: Social and Economic (1941) evince a shared concern with “poor whites”. Moreover, both locate white poverty in the same barren landscape, that of the Karoo. However, while de Kiewiet refuses to see the Karoo as sublime, Smith deploys a version of the sublime that helps naturalize the position of Afrikaners by rendering the autochthonous inhabitants of the landscape more or less invisible. Though de Kiewiet does not see the landscape as sublime, he is nevertheless overawed by empire as a transcendent, “spiritual” achievement of the reason which pre‐modern Afrikaners supposedly do not possess. Through their different invocations of the sublime in order to deal with the problems of poverty and whiteness, these texts negotiate a dilemma that has not been finally resolved in contemporary Africa, namely the position of people of European descent on that continent
