The Diplomatic Activity of Mitar Bakić, Montenegrin Envoy in İstanbul, During the Crisis in Donji Vasojevići (Berane) in 1898

The goal of this study is to elaborate on the actions of Mitar Bakić, Montenegro's diplomatic representative in the Ottoman Empire, aimed at resolving the crisis in Donji Vasojevići (Berane District). The crisis arose as the result of armed conflict between Serbs and Albanians in June 1898. In the aftermath of the clashes, the inhabitants of many burned down Serbian settlements sought refuge in Montenegro. The government there instructed Bakić to take immediate measures to help normalize the situation in the crisis area. Acting as his government demanded, Bakić headed up lively diplomatic action in İstanbul, constantly visiting Ottoman officials at Yıldız and the Porte. In so doing, he advocated for lasting peace and the establishment of satisfactory conditions for the affected population, which primarily involved the payment of compensation for destroyed property
