Comte initiated a research emphasis in sociology and used the data of history for purposes of induction. The Scotch school added observations from life to logic; Le Play attempted local studies; Quetelet applied statistics to sociological problems; Buckle refined the anthropogeographic procedure; and Spencer emphasized induction from ethnographic data. All of these approaches to an inductive sociology have since been employed, but the use of quantitative data and procedures has dominated the field since 1900. The present emphasis is mainly upon techniques of measurement. Marked intolerance of factions calls for more generalization and synthesis
