This paper attempts to describe a method for studying a minority group (the Negro community in Chicago). The object is to isolate empirically some of the significant social types that are defined by the group, to ascertain their meaning in the life of the community, and to indicate the lines of orientation out of which the various social types emerge. It is believed that empirical study of such indigenous types should offer a strategic means of learning the run of attention of the community, its main problems, and the definitions that are made with reference to issues, crises, and special situations
