The Changing Role of Women in the Armed Forces

During the last decade there has been an increase in the number of women in the armed forces and this can be projected to continue in the decade of the 1970s. In addition, the position women occupy in the military has broadened. Strains associated with this change in the concentration of women are investigated. Occupational equality for women in the services is not developing since women have historically been excluded from the basic combat roles and this definition is being continued. Among those women who volunteer for military service, the personal goal is not the achievement of "complete equality" but the attainment of a wider range of assignments. A greater emphasis in the military on administration and logistics contributes to this expansion of roles. However, significant strains present are those associated with social relations between the sexes and with child-rearing requirements
