Archaeologists, like many other anthropologists, are experiencing a renewed regard for history. This return to history comes after a period of great advances in the recording of time coupled with disdain for the study of specific local histories. Attempts to incorporate a sense of time into archaeological syntheses include contextual approaches, evolutionary analyses, phenomenological studies, and narratives. Of these, less attention has been paid to narratives, despite the importance of storytelling for an archaeology increasingly responsive to and dependent upon the general public. The stories told about one place in the U.S. historical landscape, Deerfield, Massachusetts, are analyzed using understandings of history writing and narration developed by Hayden White and Donald Wilcox. Far from developing a prescription for the wellpresented narrative, the point of the investigation is to examine the differing impacts of different kinds of narrative on various audiences. These observations are offered to further the explicit integration of time into the writing of culture histories
