The extensive appropriation of the Brazilian national team’s yellow jersey – the “amarelinha” or “camisa canarinho” – by extreme right-wing groups between 2013 and 2023 stands in stark contrast to the positive image of Brazil and Brazilian football in the second Half of the 1990s, when the “Seleção” was being built up as a global trademark. This process was centred around the yellow jersey, with strong references to the mythic halo the shirt had incorporated since the World Cup in Mexico in 1970, when Brazil consecrated itself as “home of football” and the avatar of the beautiful game – “futebol-arte” –, and its shirt became a modern myth (R. Barthes). In this article, I will analyse the historical dimension of this myth and try to comprehend the logic of its appropriation and resignification during the last decade
