Archaeological Burial Monuments of the Volga-Manych Steppe

Introduction. The work continues the Collection (Corpus) of archaeological monuments to have published data on sites excavated between 1929 and 1997 inclusive. Goals. The paper introduces further data on burial sites investigated from 1998 to 2009 in the Volga-Manych steppe, the latter largely matching the borders of Kalmykia. Materials and Methods. The review focuses on burial monuments only, and data on excavated habitats (settlements and hillforts) — including outcomes of archaeological reconnaissance — shall be examined in separate publications. Results. The period under consideration witnessed excavations of 117 kurgans to have contained 413 burials. The bulk of the latter numbering 241 are dated to the Bronze Age and primarily cluster with the Catacomb culture. Burial monuments of nomads from the Early Iron and Middle Ages number 77 and 60 respectively. Statistical analysis is supplemented with spatial one, and special attention is paid to most remarkable features of archaeological burial grounds explored during the mentioned years
