“Forged in Fire” analyzes data about knowledge production in the field of women’s studies over more than four decades. Focusing on key interdisciplinary journals and NWSA presentations over that period, the essay reveals that the experience- and identity-based knowledge produced by scholars helped to define the field’s commitment to social engagement. The data also reveal changes in the focus of knowledge production in more recent years, as the divisive politics of exclusion has reshaped American democracy
