Although death has always been an important topic for anthropologists, it is only in recent decades that the anthropology of death and dying has really taken off. Contemporary anthropologists carry out research on a broad range of death‐related topics, ranging from mortuary rituals, grief, mourning, and communication with the dead to suicide and euthanasia. This research is carried out in a wide range of settings, from the jungles of the Amazon to the intensive care wards of hospitals, from the hospice to the internet
