(AIDS Research Unit, Macquarie University, New South Wales)IntroductionThis research note documents part of a continuing research project intothe dynamics of sexual negotiation between men and women, which aimsto specify possible mechanisms for the transformation of sexual practicein the direction of safer sex (Kippax et al 1990; Crawford et al 1990;Waldby et al 1990; Waldby et al 1991). At this point in the history of theAIDS epidemic the gay community has made some effective changes inits sexual practice to defend itself against further infection, (Connell et al1989; Burcham et al 1989) but the adoption of 'safe sex' (that is non-penetrative sex or penetrative sex with a condom) among heterosexuals isstill sporadic (Crawford et al 1990).This difference can be accounted for in a number of ways: as an effectof the greater spread of the virus in the gay community, of more self-determined and concentrated education campaigns in the gay communityand as an effect of 'gay community' itself, of a sense of shared interestthat cannot obtain in the heterosexual 'general population' (Kippax et al1992). It may also be accounted for as an effect of the status of hetero-sexuality as 'natural', as beyond change. Sex that is 'natural' obviatesmodification or discussion between partners, being as it were alreadymapped out. Homosexuality, the 'unnatural act', is not so subject to con-vention, allowing more scope for mutual reinvention. New historical con-ditions, for example the AIDS epidemic, do however place demands uponmen and women to modify their sexual practice in various ways, modifi-cations which in turn require some dialogue for their implementation.Oiir research is concerned to describe and analyse accounts of such dia-logue, and to document resistance to change. Our recent research focuses on men's negotiation of sexual encounters. This focus is intended, first of all, to complement our previous researchinto women's negotiating position (Kippax et al 1990). There we foundthat the woman's negotiating position is contingent on the man's, and soit was clear that male sexuality was also in need of research if some over
