Among closed institutions surviving in contemporary Britain, mental handicap hospitals are virtually unique in assuming responsibility both for the primary socialization, and the long- term adult care of a resident population. This paper uses ethnographic data on an adolescent ward to consider the process of growing up in hospital. It examines the extent of cultural patterning in ward life, sources of cultural knowledge open to patients, and the major preoccupations and concerns of the two staff groups - nurses and teachers- having major responsibility for patient management
