This paper studies the relationship between the sex role pattern and the values of the academic world. To what extent do women acquire the values of the academic world? What consequences will a possible adjustment have for the students academic behaviour and for their intellectual development? Is the conflicts between the female culture and the values of the academic world greatest in the academic fields with the largest domination of males? The data to illustrate these questions is based on a questionnaire to 3,100 students at the University of Oslo, in the spring 1971. 1 have compared values, attitudes and intellectual development of male and students in eight different fields of study. The main result of this investigation points to the importance of organizational support for the female culture, both when the participation of women is concerned, and for their intellectual development
