C OMPARING METERS within and between literatures presents problems of differing complexity, depending on what kind of verse systems are juxtaposed. It is easier to match strict forms-for example, syllabotonic meters-because the boundaries that separate each meter from typologically adjacent forms (for example, the iambic vs. trochaic pentameter) are clear-cut. Comparative studies of this kind include Roman Jakobson's Bulgarian Iambic Pentameter Compared to (135-146), Zirmunskij's On National Forms of Iambic Verse, Gasparov's Russian lamb and the English lamb, and my own Meter and Language: Binary and Ternary Meters in English and Russian.
