Although stand-up comedy has rapidly grown into one of the most popular performing arts in Mainland China, scholarly attention to its cultural dynamics remains scarce. Within this landscape, English-language stand-up comedy stands out with its paradoxical position: marginal in scale yet saturated with prestige. To interrogate this paradox, this paper draws on affect theory, specifically shame, arguing that shame operates as a gatekeeping affect in Mainland China’s English-language stand-up comedy, performing a dual function: regulating thresholds of participation while producing contingent belonging. Crucially, this affective gatekeeping is not inherent but is performatively orchestrated through certain techniques, especially crowd work. Given this focus, we turn to Norah Yang, a leading figure in Mainland China’s English-language stand-up comedy scene. Using an affective methodological approach that combines thematic analysis and close reading, we analyse three YouTube clips exemplifying her recurring interactional strategies in crowd work, i.e. credential prompts, self-denial repair, and language checks. The clips are read as performative texts to trace how shame is mobilized through those strategies to convert hierarchical distinctions into fleeting inclusion, thereby constructing a prestige-oriented affective community. This paper contributes to ongoing debates on cultural glocalization, affect-based social formations, and classed cultural dynamics in contemporary Mainland China.
