This chapter describes ancient bookshops and booksellers in Rome. The bookshops of Rome had a commercial identity different from other small shops, such as location in a small sector of the city, unique conventions of sale, and special types of literate sociability. In Rome, it was possible to purchase Greek and Latin books, authored works and established titles, copied manuscripts, codices, and bookrolls. The wide variety of texts sold in Roman bookshops implies that booksellers were able to organize several resources in terms of materials, bibliographic information, and production techniques.
