Pilgrimage to the Oracle of Apollo at Delphi

This chapter surveys the history of consultation of the oracle of Apollo at Delphi. It shows that whereas the clientelle of Delphi is largely public theōriai in the 5th century, consulting the oracle on political and international affairs, in the course of the 4th century public theōriai seem to be rarer, and private consultations are more important. Against the view that this is a consequence of religious scepticism, it argues that oracle consultation remains common, at least at the private level, and what happens is that Delphi becomes less frequently consulted on international matters, partly because the Athenians stop consulting Delphi, and partly because Alexander the Great shifts the focus away to a broader range of oracles, including Didyma and Ammon.
