Wine for the battlefield

The newly unchallenged emperor did not yet look the part. While the tradesman of Cologne had provided food fit for his station, no one had offered suitable clothes. Only the governor of Lugdunum gave him the gold and purple that prevented him having to re-enter Italy in the shabby garb in which he had left. Once appropriately dressed, he was keen to congratulate his supporters, accommodate those who had fought against him and plan a long trip to Rome. Vitellius was not alone in getting new clothes. He raised his stammering son to the imperial purple too and renamed him Germanicus, the heir to his father as the original Germanicus had once been to Tiberius. This must have seemed a doubtful double augury for the boy.
