The Cherokee nation Inhabited some sixty towns 1 scattered across the southern tip of the great Appalachian range, from the Tennessee, or Cherokee, River in the west, to the edge of the Carolina piedmont In the east. Most of the region was mountainous, wild and formidable, giving the Cherokee far greater security than would have been available in the piedmont or tidewater regions. Yet It also gave the nation great strategic importance, giving its warriors access to two river systems, those of the Savannah and ils tributaries In the east and the mighty Ohio-Mississippi system to the west. The whole region was perhaps a hundred miles from east to west, and about fifty miles wide. The Cherokecs. Importance also derived from their numbers. Their relatively Isolated mountain dwellings afforded them considerable protection, not only against the direct impact of white settlement, but against the Old World pathogens which devastated the piedmont and tidewater peoples. Though far from Immune to the ravages of smallpox, measles, typhus, Influenza and whooping cough, the Cherokecs and other Inland peoples were able to partially rebuild their numbers between epidemics. In time they learned to abandon traditional treatments, such as sweating followed by cold baths, which only encouraged the smallpox and brought on secondary respiratory complaints.
